Recent announcements in Germany suggest that elective surgery there may soon return to about 70% of normal levels. Until recently, the novel coronavirus pandemic forced hospitals to dedicate around 50% of their beds for possible COVID-19 patients, and most elective surgery was frozen. Now that the number of patients requiring ventilation has rapidly reduced, the focus returns to safely treating elective surgery patients, and approaching normal. From now onward, hospitals must maintain 25% of their beds for COVID-19 patients, and closely monitor all aspects of care. If the rate of infection again increases, patients may need to be turned away at short notice.
Clinics we are monitoring are taking a very serious view of COVID-19, and working hard to minimise risks to staff and patients.
